Foam Boat Competition 2009

For the sum of £2.00, each participating member received a piece of close-cell polystyrene foam measuring 24” (610mm.) x 9” (220mm.) x 2” (52mm.). The challenge:- keeping to the above dimensions, construct a boat!!!!

lineup.jpg The rules were simple; electric propulsion from only one motor; capable of forward and reverse; a keel, projecting 1\2” (12mm.) below the underside of the "boat" and 1\4” (6mm.) thick; one rudder; must have a skipper with some protection, the craft must be able to carry a plastic box with lid, (supplied f.o.c. by the organisers), containing approximately one pound of water and the boat must be painted and numbered.
lineup.jpg This material is very easily worked and to any desired shape as can be seen in the photographs below. Also in the pictures can be seen the variety of types of propulsion from an outboard motor, airboats, (as seen in the Florida Everglades), to conventionally driven boats.

Best Boat - Bob Walker .
fb--480.jpg The event took place on a Sunday morning at the club’s water after a massed start at about 11-15am. The boats had to cover 2 laps of a buoyed circuit, reverse into the start area, have the cargo container of water secured on board, and then complete another 2 laps in the opposite direction. Although we had a very rainy day, it is true to say that competitors, (this didn’t start out to be a competition but it was very competitive!) and spectators had a very enjoyable time. After all the boats had completed the required number of laps, it was time to retire to the social club’s bar and dining room for a well earned drink and 3 course meal

Winning boat - Dave Haywood.
